New Jersey Kayak is surrounded by The Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.
Once in the refuge, the conditions are calm from the influence of wind, waves and tides and the waters
are shallow.   However, even though NJ Kayak is only 200 yards from the EBF Wildlife Refuge, strong wind conditions can make it a challenging paddle.
It is New Jersey Kayak's policy to review basic paddling strokes, suggest padding routes and to escort all rental guests to the refuge for your paddling pleasure and safety.  Weather conditions and your overall comfort in a kayak can determine your paddling experience.
If it is deemed that basic instruction and guide is needed for your overall safety and enjoyment it will be suggested and tour / instruction prices would apply.
Recreational kayaks come in sit-on-top or sit in versions.   Recreational kayaks are generally short and wide for stability and lack rudder and bulkheads for cost savings.
Recreational kayaks are great fun in protected waters but must be used with caution in open waters where windy conditions , strong currents and high waves may make handling the kayak difficult and or dangerous.
New Jersey Kayak specializes in sea touring kayaks but has a large compliment of recreational kayaks for sale and for those more comfortable in renting a recreational kayak.  Renting a recreational kayak from New Jersey Kayak is a fun way  to explore the nearby wildlife refuge  but is dependent on weather conditions and your overall comfort in a kayak.

Sea (Coastal) Touring Kayaks are fully bullheaded and have rudder or skeg.  The fore and aft bulkheads, besides providing dry storage for gear, provide airtight compartments which enable the paddler the ability to self rescue in the event of a capsize.  The rudder and skeg are aides in keeping a course and in turning. Touring kayaks are generally from 14' to 18' long and because of their longer waterline length track well and are faster then recreational kayaks.
Because of their increased performance, touring kayaks require a basic level of paddling skills and understanding of the possibility of a wet exit in order to rent.  If desired or recommended, daily instruction and tours are available.  Please call or email for an appointment.
