New Jersey Kayak’s Children Summer Kayak Camp introduces children to kayaking through a
four day program, Mon. through Thurs., 9:30am-1:00pm.  The Children Summer Kayak Camp is designed to progressfully instruct students the paddling skills and the rescue techniques necessary for your child to safely navigate a coastal sea touring kayak with confidence.
New Jersey Kayak’s professional American Canoe Association (ACA) staff will guide with a ratio of at least one guide per five students with a minimum of two guides, to insure personal instruction and safety.  Besides kayak instruction, our goal is for your child to experience a fun, memorable and safe time.

Day one: The workings & terminology of a true coastal kayak is explained. Each student is fitted to
a child sized professional coastal kayak (equipped with rudder), a fitted kayak lifejacket (PFD), and quality fiberglass shaft paddle. Paddling instruction is given and demonstrated within NJ Kayak’s protected waterfront location on Barnegat Bay. Safety issues are reviewed before an introductory paddle to the surrounding Wildlife Refuge.

Day Two:  The “wet exit” and self rescue and assisted rescue is demonstrated, instructed and performed by each student within the protected harbor.  After each student has practiced the “wet exit’, NJ Kayak’s guide take a longer kayak tour to and within the shallow water creeks and salt ponds of the surrounding Wildlife Refuge where varied coastal birds can be observed.
Day Three:  Depending on the weather and the interests of the students, NJ Kayak will, for many, introduce the students to fishing, crabbing or sailing.  This is a great opportunity to experience Barnegat Bay in a different way. For many children, it was their first experience and it was a great pleasure to introduce them to these Barnegat bay activities.
Day Four:  The students take a five to six mile extended kayak tour through the E.B.F. Wildlife Refuge.
This fun adventurous paddle is a great opportunity to review all skills of kayak touring, view the wildlife and natural beauty of the refuge and build confidence in hopefully a lifelong sport.
For a congratulation end of course, a class cookout picnic is provided with parents welcome.
